Curated Curiosity: Your Diet Tribe Is Lying To You (Here's Why)

The surprising science behind why most diets work equally well - and what actually matters for results.

TODAY'S INSIGHT

"When something aligns with our personal beliefs, our level of skepticism is basically nothing. When something opposes our personal beliefs, it's through the roof."

WHAT THEY SAID

  • Long-term diet success depends on lifestyle change, not the specific diet - studies show 90%+ regain weight within 3 years because they view dieting as temporary.

  • Research comparing 14 different popular diets found no significant differences in long-term weight loss when calories and protein were equal.

  • The best diet is the one you can stick to consistently - successful weight loss maintainers form a new identity and often gain new social circles.

  • Exercise is dramatically overhyped for weight loss - but just 4 minutes of vigorous activity per day can reduce cancer risk by 20%.

  • Snacking is a major hidden saboteur - studies show people routinely underreport calories by 50% and overreport physical activity by 47%.

WHY IT MATTERS

The fitness industry profits from complexity and tribalism, but sustainable results come from consistency with basic principles. Understanding this lets you stop wasting energy on optimizing the wrong things and focus on what actually moves the needle.

MY TAKES

Kind of like yesterday, I have been very interested in the 80/20 principle. If you are unfamiliar with it see the tweet below.

Again, we should be looking for the 20% of the inputs in all areas of our lives that result in 80% of the output. Unfortunately, both in work and health and wellness, we are so bogged down in minutia we seem to focus on the other 80% that doesn’t result in much result.

I am incredibly grateful for you reading.

See you tomorrow.
