Curated Curiosity: Movement is Medicine (But Not How You Think)

Dr. Kelly Starrett reveals why your gym routine might be holding you back, and what to do instead...

TODAY'S INSIGHT

"The gym shouldn't be the loneliest place in the world. If you're not making eye contact and high-fiving, get a different gym."

- Dr. Kelly Starrett

WHAT THEY SAID

  • Movement poverty is real: Most people only use a tiny vocabulary of movements (sitting, standing, walking slowly), severely limiting their body's potential

  • Your tissues should feel like "layers of warm silk sliding over steel springs" - if they don't, you're likely missing key ranges of motion

  • 80% of workouts should be at 80% intensity, 10% at 90%, 5% at 95%, and only 5% at 100% maximum effort

  • Floor-sitting for 20-30 minutes daily can dramatically improve hip mobility and reduce fall risk in older adults

  • Pain isn't always a medical problem - it's often a request for change from your body

WHY IT MATTERS

The modern fitness industry has become overly focused on aesthetics and isolated exercises, causing us to lose the fundamental movement patterns that keep us healthy and functional. By reintegrating basic movement practices into daily life, we can prevent injuries, maintain mobility, and enhance performance without adding more gym time.

MY TAKES

The fitness industry's obsession with complex programs and fancy equipment has made us forget that movement is a fundamental human need, not just a workout metric.

We should be optimizing for sustainability. Not necessarily optimizing.

PS: Sorry, I have been inconsistent lately sending. I have been working on something and I think you will enjoy it when I show you.
